About La Burrita Lola

Emily first met Lola in early August of 2025. Her neighbor, a horse trader, invited her to see his new donkey for sale. Emily agreed to come visit, with the preface that she was not going to buy a donkey. Famous last words!

Emily saw Lola--a quiet, little brown donkey...head held low, facing a corner--and everything changed.  Emily learned that Lola had been constantly moved for different jobs like olive-harvesting, hauling wood and giving rides. She had been sold at least twelve times in her twelve years of life. Donkeys are loving, social creatures that strongly bond with other equines and people. Emily realized that Lola was in desperate need of a permanent, loving home. So, within a few days, Emily purchased Lola with the hope of giving her a long, happy and comfortable life. 

Lola was received with open arms by the community of Frigiliana. What a beautiful surprise! As Emily walked along the old quarter of the village, the elder generation of residents would come outside to pet Lola and point out where their own childhood donkey had been kept. Not too long ago, many homes in the village had a stable in the back room. These animals were precious members of the family, as they literally supported their needs, from gathering firewood, to transportation and harvesting food. Esparto mats would be placed on the floor each evening for their donkey to pass through the house to rest for the night. Lola brings happiness to our lovely locals, and it has been a pleasure to connect with them while they lovingly stroke her warm fur and recount their memories.

As time passed, Emily began offering guided walks in the Frigiliana hillside with Lola. This has become a special way to allow people and donkeys to interact. Lola is calm-natured, sweet and gentle, and she has now brought joy to people from all walks of life and from many different countries. She is internationally adored! Sometimes, when Emily sees her cuddling up to a new, smiling friend, she wonders if Lola knows how dearly she is loved.
